Town of Herndon Mayor Steve DeBenedittis Announces Mayoral Re-Election Bid (Herndon, VA) January 14, 2008 – Herndon Mayor Steve DeBenedittis formally announces his intention to seek re-election in the May 6, 2008 Town election. Mayor DeBenedittis is visiting residents of Herndon in order to gain their perspectives and to collect their signatures to place his name on the ballot. A Herndon resident since 1968, DeBenedittis is completing his first term as Herndon’s Mayor, during which he has produced significant improvements positively impacting the quality of life within the Town of Herndon. "I am privileged to have the opportunity to work for the residents of Herndon. We have accomplished a great deal and continue to work on many important and exciting issues. I look forward to the opportunity to continue serving the Town that means so much to me," DeBenedittis said. Tom Rust, former long time Herndon Mayor and current Virginia State Delegate representing Herndon and the 86th district said, “Steve has been a strong leader and a good listener for the Town so I am pleased to endorse his candidacy for re-election as Mayor”. Reflecting upon his successful tenure, Mayor DeBenedittis cited just a few of the many accomplishments and issues impacting the Town of Herndon: Overcrowding – Focusing on overcrowding with additional resources resulted in new cases dropping by 50% in the third quarter of 2007 when compared to the same time period in 2006. “It is important that all residents live in a healthy and safe environment and that neighborhoods are free of the negative impacts of overcrowding,” DeBenedittis said. Taxes and Spending – Controlled spending in FY2008 while maintaining a standard of excellence in all aspects of Town services. “Fiscal responsibility is one of the most important aspects of our job as elected officials and stewards of the Town’s financial resources,” DeBenedittis said. Downtown Re-development – Working with the business community on downtown re-development that will enhance but not overwhelm Herndon’s historic downtown and provide desired public amenities. Day Labor & Immigration – Oversaw closure of the taxpayer funded day labor site and worked closely with staff and local businesses to prevent a return to the issues of the past. Championed 287g agreement between Herndon Police and ICE to allow Herndon officers to identify illegal aliens who commit serious violations of our laws, including drunk driving, and detain them for Federal processing and deportation. DeBenedittis demonstrates his genuine respect for all Town residents by welcoming their input. "I strongly believe that government works best when citizens are involved in the process. I have worked hard to make sure the voices of the residents of Herndon are heard. I will continue to listen carefully to every resident’s concerns," DeBenedittis said. ##### |
